Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
Course outline :

The qualification will contribute to the candidate’s skills, knowledge and understanding of best practice and national standards for adult teaching.  The unit is taught as a stand-alone qualification to achieve the PTLLS and also forms one of the units in the higher level qualification, the Certificate in Teaching in Lifelong Learning.   Progression can be to full Qualified Tutor Status (QTS) for those that are seeking a full time career in adult tutoring.

This is a one unit qualification comprising of the following sections:

  1. Understand own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching;
  2. Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area;
  3. Demonstrate session planning skills;
  4. Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners;
  5. Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping.

Assessment and Achievement

Each of the 5 sections above will be assessed within the three assignments which comprise seven tasks (per assignment).  To achieve the qualification candidates must successfully complete the theory assignment and the practical assignment.  Micro-teaching; An important element of completing the course will be delivering a 30 minute micro-teach.

This will equip a wide range of adult teachers with an Award that has been termed by the Sector Skills Council for Lifelong Learning as “a threshold licence to teach”.  The course is aimed at candidates who are:

  • Seeking career progression within this area of work;
  • Interested in an introduction to teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector;
  • Interested in teaching adults on a one to one or group basis.

This qualification is suitable for those who work or want to work as:

  • A voluntary sector adult tutor;
  • A community education or further education adult tutor;
  • A work-based learning tutor (providing training in your organisation).

Learners for this course must have literacy equivalent to level 2 (5 GCSEs A-C grade) and ideally IT skills in order to undertake relevant internet research.
