Case Study
Jay Akerele attended and achieved The Certificate in Community Development last year. We asked him a few questions about his experience of the Vista course:
Why did you enroll on the course in the first place?
I had just started @ Somerset Race Equality Council as Support Officer and I was supported by a team director to enroll on the course as I was very new to Community Development Work
What did you like best on the course?
As a new immigrant to the UK, I liked learning about the UK structure politically in all its arenas. I liked being in an environment where I could easily ask all the burning questions in my mind about VSC; Community Structures; Goverment initiatives; the Zeitgiest of the moment, etc. The small group we had made it possible to do so.
What had the most impact on your work and professional practice for Community Development Work?
The most impact this course had on my work, was to give me the confidence and determination to become a Community Development Worker!
What successes have you achieved in communities since the training?

So far my main success, has been appointed as a Community Development Worker for the NHS in North Somerset! I recently had the honour of meeting Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II through my job I gained confidence for this new role because of this course with ViSTA.
What would you tell other people interested in the course?
Do it! Its an extrememly valuable course that makes you look at the political and realistic structure of the UK in a way that empowers you to better aid the communities you are trying to help, but by empowering them to develop!
I loved the course and have made good life-long friendships from it. I feel priviledged to have been one of the few in our group that gained the certificate in community development work!
